T
his is clearly one of the iconic wines of the last century and
should be celebrated. It retains all its glossy, rich, flamboyant
cassis fruit, with a hint of chocolate, berry jam-like notes, and
plenty of earthy flavors. It is incredibly well-balanced and pure,
scoring a
perfect 100 ranking from Robert Parker
.
The history of this property is rich and wild, and its prosperity can
be traced to a storied Grande Dame—the original Countess de
Lalande whose name still rests on this wine. Her leadership, and
that of the indomitable May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, previous
Lyric Opera Wine Auction Honored Guest, illuminate the
centrality of Grand Dames to the world of wine.
This lot is offered in tribute to all the Grand Dames at Lyric
Opera
— Carol Fox and Ardis Krainik, past and present members
of the eponymous Lyric Opera Women’s Board, and divas from the
fabulous Maria Callas to the graceful and dynamic Renée Fleming.
