OUR FINAL LOT OF THE EVENING TAKES US
BACK TO THE BEGINNING.
1
988. The year that
Phantom of the Opera
opened on Broadway,
the year the Chicago Cubs got permission to install lights and
play a few night games, and the year of the inaugural Lyric Opera
Wine Auction. We’ve come a long way, baby!
1988 Latour
is classified as First Growth, and this vintage is first
rate. It shows off its bouquet of plums, black currants, cedar, and
underbrush with gusto then follows that with a sweet entry, a
full body, excellent ripeness, and mature integrated tannin. This
truly is a classic, elegant Latour which will please even the most
discriminating palate, with more meaty, vegetable-like flavors than
are found in a riper year.
1988 Gruaud Larose
is another elite powerful red, with
wonderful fruit concentration. It presents classic Saint-Julien notes
of black currant, cedar, lead pencil and superb concentration and
length. The top-notch Château Gruaud Larose ensures quality
and a wine that will not disappoint.
