AN EXTRAORDINARY PAIRING.
P
airing these two vintages is extraordinary
, being that they
were both excellent years for the world-class Lafite Rothschild
to fully express itself. The blend in 2000 was 93% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 7%Merlot, creating both extreme power and
delicacy on the palate with waves of black currant, mulberry,
caramel and violets. The tannic structure is firm and the finish
elegantly lengthy. Robert Parker felt the wine had extraordinary
aromatic expression of liquid minerals/stones in the mouth, yet
was remarkably light on its feet. He awarded the
2000 Lafite 100
points
. The ‘89, bursting with dark deep ruby color and more of
a forward approach, has a tad more alcohol revealing the warmer
vintage. It’s rich in deep fruit, considerable elegance and has a
sweet tannic finish.
Another pairing we like? Grand opera and fine wine.
