ohn Shafer is the patriarch of Napa Valley. Revered for

his work in the vineyards as well as for his commitment to

philanthropic causes, he has championed the wines of Shafer

Vineyards since the early days of Napa, when he moved his

family there from Chicago in 1972.

Hillside Select is one of the world-class wines of Napa.

The

estate keeps this cuvée 32 months in 100% new French oak and

each of the bottles here show amazing finesse. This signature wine

of Shafer Vineyards is sourced from the slopes of an amphitheater-

like structure of rock, where the volcanic soil sits atop weathered

bedrock. This unique landscape contributes to the hill’s quick

runoff and forces the vines to work ever so hard to produce

clusters of grapes with small, intensely flavored berries.

Thanks

to this diligent effort, the Hillside Select truly is a “wine of a

place,” and reflects the heart of Stag’s Leap District.

The

2007

has fantastic aging potential, especially in this

Imperial bottling, and it scores a very high 98 points.

It takes

concentration, graciousness and complexity to its highest level

in Napa Valley.

An inky/blue/purple color is followed by sweet

aromas of blueberries, blackberries, charcoal and subtle toast.

The wine possesses fabulous concentration, a seamless/flawless

personality, a textbook integration of alcohol, wood, tannin and

acidity, an almost endless finish and a voluptuous texture.
