FAVIA IS FABULOUS AND SLOAN IS, TOO!

V

ineyard specialist Annie Favia, who herself spent a decade

working with David Abreu, convinced her husband Andy

Erickson (winemaker for Dalla Valle, Ovid, Dancing Hares

and Arietta with past stints at Screaming Eagle, Staglin, and

Harlan—for some serious name-dropping!) to set up shop in

Coombsville.

Tucked behind neighborhoods on Napa’s east side, Coombsville

begins where the city ends, far south of the more famous

“up-valley” destinations. Marine incursion layers that snake into

the Napa Valley from the San Pablo Bay arrive here first and leave

here last, resulting in one of the valley’s longest growing seasons.

Coombsville is likely the coolest cab-producing region in the Napa

Valley which results in extraordinary balance and lower alcohol

levels in the best cases.

So how is it working out in Coombsville? Well, the

2011 Cerro

Sur

shows silky layers of dark red berries, dried flowers, sage

and exotic spices, all in a rich, voluptuous style that is impossible

to resist. There is plenty of underlying tension and minerality

to balance the fruit in this compelling wine. Moving into the

La

Magdalena

, it has a distinct personality with its 50/50 blend of

Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bright ruby-red in color,

it boasts vibrant aromas of red currant, cherry, licorice and violet.

The

Cabernet

, which is 50% made of Oakville fruit, still has the

mark of this stellar winemaking team, but the warmer climate

grapes giving it a fuller body and mildly longer finish. Altogether,

this Favia Collection offers endless “Coombsvillian” pleasure.

And then there’s

SLOAN 2000 is the inaugural vintage

, and only

310 cases were produced this year. It’s insanely dense, powerful,

and typical of the Napa style Cabernet produced. Generally

considered one of the most exclusive and guarded wines in

California, here’s an

exceedingly rare opportunity to own three

bottles—one for you, your sister, and the friend who always

opens the wine you bring to dinner!
