THE RARITY OF THESE RHÔNE BEAUTIES IN

THIS SHORT VERTICAL SHOULD BE PRIZED.

T

hose who cherish the power and perfume of classic Hermitage

know that some of the greatest examples come from the Jean-

Louis Chave family cellars. The family dates back to 1481 in the

Northern Rhône region of Hermitage, continuing a five-century

dynasty of extraordinarily high quality and pure expression of the

region.

The beauty and complexity found in JL Chave Hermitage is in their

masterful blending. The only grape used in their red wine is Syrah,

but the wine is produced from a melange of the top sources in the

appellation. Many Syrah add up to be greater than the sum of their

individual parts.

The wines show a nice nose of black tea, black olive tapenade,

smoky meat and earth notes.

They are certainly wines of great

depth and structure, drinking very nicely right now but will

benefit even more from another decade.

The

1990

is the

bigger wine in the group, with huge and explosive flavors on the

palate yet amazing polish and even more balance than the earlier

vintages.
